Orthodontic Treatment on the NHS

Orthodontic treatment is available on the NHS for patients under the age of 18 whose teeth could pose health problems. Certain criteria must be met to receive NHS orthodontic treatment. It is important to note that cosmetic orthodontics are not covered.

If your child isn't eligible for a certain treatment under the NHS, we can treat them as an independent patient. This can be discussed at your child's initial consultation.

upper teeth, dental professionals, fixed braces
dental braces, traditional braces, misaligned teeth

How do NHS appointments work?

Before you begin treatment as an NHS patient, we assess your orthodontic needs and discuss your treatment options at a consultation. Not all types of orthodontic braces are available under the NHS but we're happy to explain everything to you during this discussion. We may also take an x-ray to help us assess your growth and development.

If one of our specialists believes there is a treatment open to your child on the NHS that could benefit them, they will discuss these options and treatment plans with you.

Once the braces have been fitted, you will need to attend appointments every 6-8 weeks so we can check on the progress of your treatment.

What if your child is not eligible?

In response to funding restrictions and regulations within the NHS, we have introduced an independent fee structure. This is to allow for affordable ’NHS equivalent’ orthodontics for our patients who are not eligible for NHS treatment. We also welcome patients on a private basis, where you have access to a wider range of treatment plans and options for your whole family.
