Your treatment journey
From the moment you step in the door at Bishops Stortford Orthodontics, to the day you walk away with your brand new smile, our team want to ensure you are comfortable with your treatment experience.
To achieve that, we believe it is important you understand how the orthodontic treatment process works here at Bishops Stortford Orthodontics. Although every patient has a unique treatment plan prepared for them, here is a guide to achieving your perfect smile.
Your initial consultation
We offer each of our patients a free appointment to kick start their orthodontic treatment. There's no obligation to proceed with treatment but by attending a free consultation to begin with you can at least make an informed decision as to whether you'd like to have orthodontic treatment or not.
At your initial consultation, we'll assess your teeth and jaws to determine what your orthodontic needs are, prepare a bespoke treatment plan for you, including a quote for treatment, and explain our finance and payment plan options. Armed with this information, you can then decide whether orthodontic treatment with the team at Bishops Stortford Orthodontics is right for you. We certainly hope it is!
Fitting your appliance
If you've decided to go ahead with treatment, we ask you come back in so we can prepare your appliance. This is usually done using the iTero Digital Scanner, the latest in orthodontic technology. This scanner gives us a 3D view of your teeth and jaws so we can get your appliance custom made.
Once your braces or Invisalign aligners are ready, it's time to fit them to your teeth. This appointment will take approximately one hour, during which we'll also provide you with advice on how to look after your teeth and your appliance to get the very best result.
The duration of treatment will be outlined in your treatment plan. Most orthodontic cases take between 12 and 24 months. During this time, we'll ask you to come in for a check up once every six -to-eight weeks so we can check on progress. We want to make sure your teeth are heading in the right direction!
The rest of the time it is up to you to look after your teeth and braces. How well you keep to your oral hygiene routine determines the result of your treatment. If you have any questions about what you can or can't eat, or better brushing techniques, you can always give us a call. We'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
Keeping your teeth straight
Once your teeth have reached their newly straightened position, it's important to keep them there. You can do this by wearing retainers. The retention phase is essential if you want your teeth to stay straight. Retainers are like small mouthguards which you'll need to wear once your appliance has been removed. Initially, you'll need to wear them for about three months both day and night, then once the initial few months has passed, just wear them at night.
We'll also get you to come in and see us a few times so we can check your teeth have remained straight!
